Newly Donated Works Enrich Puerto Rican Graphic Arts Holdings

Báez, Myrna.  “La guayabera”, colografía, 1977.

Princeton University Library is honored to receive a new generous donation of graphic artworks by renowned Puerto Rican artists Luis Alonso, Myrna Báez, Isabel Bernal, Luis Germán Cajiga, Lorenzo Homar, Antonio Martorell, and Jorge Zeno, gifted by Alma Concepción and Arcadio Díaz Quiñones.

Alonso, Luis.   “La espera”, xilografía, 1976.

This exceptional selection of works further enriches the Library’s superb collection of Puerto Rican graphic arts, offering students, scholars, and the public invaluable opportunities to study and appreciate Puerto Rico’s rich artistic legacy and visual culture.

Bernal, Isabel.  “Pueblito de Santiago”.  División de Educación de la Comunidad (DIVEDCO, San Juan, Puerto Rico).

In the words of the donors:

In these uncertain times, we are grateful for their preservation, hoping that present and future generations will get to know these artists and their art, and will explore the many cultural and historical connections that have shaped Puerto Rican communities.”

Morales, Jorge. (Jorge Zeno) “El Bolitero”.  Woodcut.

These cultural and historical connections include Princeton University itself, dating back to the close friendship between Elmer Adler—printer, publisher, Curator of Graphic Arts at Princeton (1940–1952), and founder of La Casa del Libro in San Juan—and the eminent graphic artist Lorenzo Homar. That legacy has continued over time, thanks in no small part to the thoughtful and sustained contributions of Concepción and Díaz Quiñones.

Cajiga, Luis Germán.  “Acrílicos”.  Late 1960s or early 70s.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our dear friends Alma and Arcadio, confident that their generous donation will remain an extraordinary resource for the study and appreciation of Puerto Rican graphic arts for generations to come.

Martorell, Antonio.  “Onceavas Fiestas de Bomba y Plena del barrio San Antón de Ponce”.  Silkscreen, 1988.
